I've finally taken the plunge and created this blog to showcase my Code 55 Finescale Exhibition Layout 'Bennerley Junction'.
People who read RMWeb of New Railway Modellers may have already seen my layout.
It's modelled on the protoypical location of Bennerley Junction on the Erewash Valley line in between Ilkeston and Langley Mill.
The most impressive feature of this area is the wrought iron Bennerley viaduct which had it's track lifted in the 1970s and the embankments demolished, leaving a curiously isolated structure which can be seen for miles around.
The site originally had an Ironworks with a large network of associated sidings, as well as being a reasonably sized railway junction. The Ironworks was mostly demolished and became an opencast site until the early 1980s.
In the early 1980s, British Coal built a coal disposal point on the site, which was finally demolished in the late 1990s and now little of the site remains.
My layout represents the period 1980 - 1992 which allows for a variety of traffic and liveries. As well as the staple DMU and MGR diagrams which are common to this line, I run out of region interlopers (such as Class 26, MOD trains etc.) to keep things interesting. My eventual aim is to get a Dapol HST to finally complete the basic 'stock list' for the layout.
the layout is end to end over two board, with a cassette based fiddleyard at either end allowing me to change trains over. The layout is fully DCC and is controlled by an NCE Powercab unit.
Models are mostly Farish/Dapol RTR items, but I have/am building a lot of kits, mainly NGS, Parkside Dundas and Chivers finelines. As more people start to take the plunge, expect to see some 3D printed models on my layout too! I'm also remodelling the coal discharge building (the big grey thing) to make it look a bit more realistic - more news on this in the next few weeks.
Anyway, enough blabbering for now, here are some pictures of my layout in action to 'whet' your appetite, future updates as and when I find the time to do some modelling!
